In a proactive step towards cultivating tax awareness among youth, the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA)—in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources—has launched the Tax Club Project across secondary schools.
This forward-thinking initiative aims to instill a strong culture of tax literacy among students by establishing Tax Clubs in schools. Rather than one-off awareness campaigns, these clubs are envisioned as ongoing platforms for learning, discussion, and engagement on tax-related topics—helping to build a generation of informed and responsible future taxpayers.
The project has already made impressive strides: 46 State Secondary Colleges have successfully set up their Tax Clubs, with students actively participating in a variety of activities such as elocution contests, quizzes, and debates.
A key highlight of the initiative has been the elocution and debate competitions held in August 2025. Preliminary rounds took place on 14th and 19th August, attracting 72 enthusiastic participants. The semi-finals, held on 26th August, saw eight students advance after a series of thought-provoking presentations and debates.
Semi-Final Highlights:
Semi-Final 1:
Elocution Theme: “Combating Tax Evasion: A Modern Challenge for the MRA”
Debate Motion: “This House believes that stricter enforcement is more effective than taxpayer education in combating tax evasion.”
Semi-Final 2:
Elocution Theme: “My Dream: A Mauritius Where Everyone Pays Their Fair Share of Taxes”
Debate Motion: “This House believes that achieving a tax system where everyone pays their fair share is essential for Mauritius’ progress.”
Following these engaging rounds, two colleges have earned their place in the Grand Final, which is set to take place soon.
Through initiatives like the Tax Club Project, the MRA is not just raising awareness—it's shaping the mindset of future generations, fostering a deeper understanding of the vital role taxation plays in national development.
