The Tax for Growth team, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA), invites you to join them on the 21st of January from 2-3 pm GMT/UTC for an online webinar on harnessing artificial intelligence and data for tax administration. The session will explore how AI technologies are reshaping tax systems globally, with a particular focus on opportunities and challenges for Commonwealth tax administrations.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping tax administration around the world. Nearly half of all tax authorities globally are already using AI tools—from machine learning models that detect evasion, to chatbots that cut service backlogs, to automated document processing that frees up scarce staff time. For many Commonwealth tax administrations, AI offers a unique opportunity: to strengthen enforcement, expand the tax base, and improve taxpayer services despite constraints on capacity and resources.

This webinar, scheduled for the 21st of January from 2-3pm GMT, introduces the IGC’s new Policy Toolkit: Harnessing AI and Data for Tax Administration, designed specifically with Commonwealth tax administrators in mind. Drawing on survey data from CATA member countries, international evidence, and real-world implementation examples, the toolkit provides:

  • Clear guidance on where AI can add value now, including evasion detection, customs risk management and policy drafting

  • A practical roadmap to get started, even for administrations at early stages of digital maturity—focusing on building data foundations, skills, and governance frameworks

  • Examples from peer countries, such as machine learning for customs in Paraguay, the detection of ghost firm VAT fraud in Ecuador, and scanner data matching in Uganda, demonstrate how AI can deliver real revenue gains

  • Tools for responsible adoption, including guidance on governance and ethical frameworks

Participants will leave the session with a clear understanding of what AI can do, how to adopt it responsibly, where quick wins lie, and how to sequence reforms regardless of starting point.

This webinar offers a chance to learn directly from leading researchers and senior Commonwealth officials already experimenting with AI—providing insights that can be applied immediately in the context of domestic revenue mobilisation.

Thank you,
