In continued efforts to foster a national culture of voluntary tax compliance, the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) recently collaborated with the National Financial Literacy Programme (NFLP), and hosted a sensitisation workshop for staff and facilitators of the Programme.
The workshop, held under the theme “From Confusion to Confidence: Navigating Tax Compliance with Ease”, was designed to address critical knowledge gaps among the independent professionals. It was also aimed at equipping the key stakeholders with regulatory clarity and strengthening the broader financial literacy ecosystem across Barbados.
The NFLP utilises a network of specialised consultants who operate as independent professionals. While highly skilled in their respective disciplines, many reportedly encounter challenges regarding self-employed tax obligations. As such, BRA Senior Manager, Headquarters Services, Carolyn Williams-Gayle, explained that the workshop served as “a vital intervention, ensuring that these consultants can seamlessly navigate their personal responsibilities while accurately imparting financial literacy concepts to the wider public”.
She added that through this strategic partnership, the BRA aims to demystify administrative tax processes, offer authoritative guidance on statutory compliance, and provide practical training on the Authority’s Tax Administration Management Information System (TAMIS).
The one-day workshop was structured around formal presentations, group discussion, and deep-dives into tax concepts. There was also a system demonstration of the TAMIS platform, which allowed participants to explore account management, filing protocols, and digital payment troubleshooting.
According to Williams-Gayle, the workshop represented a proactive benchmark in public-private sector alignment, the impact of which extends beyond immediate compliance to a reduction in systemic filing errors, a boost in the independent contractors’ confidence in navigating the digital platform, and a strengthened partnership between the BRA and the NFLP.
