This year marks a significant milestone for the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) as it celebrates 15 years of dedicated service to the nation. Established on 2 August 2010 with just 40 employees, MIRA has grown remarkably to a workforce of over 300 staff members and now operates 18 offices nationwide, making it one of the largest state institutions in the Maldives.
Speaking at the staff gathering event, Commissioner General of Taxation, Mr. Hassan Zareer, extended his congratulations to taxpayers and the public, reflecting on MIRA’s journey and the evolution of the Maldivian tax system. Over the years, MIRA has introduced major tax policies, including GST and Income Tax, and transitioned to digital services with 97% of tax returns and 99% of payments now submitted online. MIRA’s revenue collection has grown from MVR 4.56 billion in 2011 to MVR 28.10 billion in 2024, now contributing over 80% of government revenue.
MIRA’s influence also extends internationally, with the Maldives currently serving as Regional Director for Asia within the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators, and the Commissioner General co-chairing the Asia Initiative under the OECD’s Global Forum.

The anniversary celebrations kicked off with “Fun Fanara,” a staff event featuring team building sports activities. The celebrations concluded with the Anniversary Night and the Ran Fanara Award ceremony, where 15 top taxpayers recognized for their contributions from 2011 to mid-2025 were honored by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Honorable Moosa Zameer. Long-serving staff were also recognized, with special awards presented to those who completed 10 and 15 years at MIRA, along with the annual ‘Staff of the Year’ award.
As it enters its 16th year, MIRA remains committed to enhancing taxpayer services, embracing digital innovation, and supporting the nation's continued growth.
