Administrative Changes to Improve Efficiency and Effectiveness

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) recently introduced administrative changes related to receiving applications of Objections, as well as the discontinuation of accepting personal and company cheques.

As of July 1, 2025, the process for filing Objections to Notices of Assessments must be done online. As such, taxpayers are now required to submit Objections through their eServices account of the TAJ website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.

This new requirement forms part of the Tax Authority’s continued efforts to improve the ease of doing business and improve service delivery through greater use of technology. The mandatory online filing will allow faster processing, more effective communication and faster reaction time for both taxpayers and TAJ.

Persons who wish to object to a Notice of Assessment must do so within 30 days from the date the notice was served. By law, the taxpayer bears the responsibility of proving that the assessment is incorrect or erroneous. An objection must state the specific grounds on which the objection is being made and supporting documentation or evidence to substantiate the claim must be made available on request. A signed letter of objection must be uploaded through the eServices account on TAJ’s website.

As it relates to cheques, Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) advised the public that effective September 1, 2025, the Authority will no longer accept cheques as a method of payment for taxes and other public monies, except in the following instances:

  • Where a valid cheque is issued by another Ministry, Department, or Public Body; or

  • Where a valid Manager’s Cheque is issued by a local licensed Commercial Bank regulated by the Bank of Jamaica.

This policy shift is part of TAJ’s continued efforts to modernize its operations, strengthen risk management, and enhance the efficiency, security and reliability of its payment processes. With this new policy, customers are being encouraged to use other available payment options, such as, logging on to the tax portal at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm and use a valid debit or credit card, using the Direct Funds Transfer (DFT) from any local bank, as well as through the online banking platform of the two major banks operating in the country.
